On day two of your itinerary we hope you’re rested and ready for a tour of Tokyo’s many exciting attractions. You will probably begin by exploring Asakusa’s low-rise market stalls and its temple, Senso-ji, before going on to discover some of Tokyo’s other distinct districts – perhaps the vibrant streets of Harajuku, known for its fashion and pop culture, or the famous scramble crossing at Shibuya. A visit to Tokyo’s beautiful Hamarikyu Gardens, an oasis of calm in the metropolis, will also be included today.
Overnight: Gracery Asakusa Hotel
Fly north to Hokkaido, Japan’s second-largest island and home to spectacular wildlife and scenery.
Today you will hop aboard a private bus and head out of the city to Haneda Airport for your flight to Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the second-largest of Japan’s four main islands, and yet it remains unvisited by most international visitors – and even by most Japanese! Known for its rare wildlife, rugged sweeping plains, volcanic landscapes and amazing snow festivals, Hokkaido is a superb winter destination and definitely off the beaten track.
You will land in Kushiro and transfer by private coach to Tsurui , where you’ll be spending your first night in Hokkaido. A delicious home-cooked dinner will be included at your accommodation this evening.
Overnight: Woody Hotel & Restaurant Yumekobo
Witness the mating dance of the famous red-crowned crane in Tsurui.
Tsurui is famous as a breeding-ground for the rare red-crowned crane, and this morning you will have the services of an expert local guide in addition to your tour leader as you take a bird-watching tour of the area. Hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to see the cranes perform their incredible mating dance – don’t forget to bring your camera!
This afternoon you’ll transfer by private coach to Kawayu Onsen near to Lake Kussharo.
Overnight: Kawayu Kanko Hotel
Take an icebreaker cruise amongst the ice floes of the Okhotsk Sea and visit one of Abashiri’s fascinating museums.
This morning it’s time to board an icebreaker for a cruise on the Okhotsk Sea. From your boat you’ll be able to appreciate the wild scenery of the Shiretoko Peninsula and perhaps even get up close to a flock of Steller’s Sea Eagles as they congregate on the ice floes.
Later on you will once again climb aboard a private coach and make your way to Abashiri, where this afternoon you’ll visit the Abashiri Prison Museum, an interesting set of buildings that were constructed during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Dinner will be included tonight, at the hotel.
Overnight: Abashiri Koso
Marvel at the giant snow sculptures at Sapporo’s famous Yuki Matsuri, or snow festival.
Today you will take the train from Abashiri to Sapporo, Hokkaido’s capital city. The train ride will be an experience in itself, offering fantastic views of Hokkaido’s vast, windswept snowscapes as you journey across country.
In Sapporo you’ll have a chance to slow your pace a little and relax, with two nights in your hotel located conveniently next to Sapporo station.
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and most notably hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972. You’ll have a chance to explore the city and sample some of the unique cuisine such as the local buttery ramen noodles. The Odori Park in the centre of the city is a hive of activity during the annual snow festival, with snow sculptures and street food stalls providing a feast for the eyes and the stomach! The city also features some Meiji period architecture most notably at the city’s iconic Clock Tower.
On day seven you have a full day to enjoy the winter wonderland of Sapporo. We recommend visiting the Nijo Fish Market, checking out the Ainu Museum about Hokkaido’s indigenous people, or perhaps scaling the TV tower for great views of the city before an included dinner at a local Beer Garden (indoor), where you can savour Hokkaido’s famous “Genghis Khan” grilled lamb alongside plentiful beer in a fun and relaxed setting.

Spectacular nighttime views and samurai skirmishes await you in the port city of Hakodate.

With a history closely tied to Japan’s re-opening to the world in the nineteenth century after over 250 years of national isolation, Hakodate quickly became one of the most important Japanese hubs for foreign trade. This afternoon, explore the Meiji period red-brick warehouses, with many of them now converted into trendy shops, cafes and restaurants, before diving deeper into the early modern history of the city at the unique star-shaped Goryokaku fort.
As the sun sets, you’ll head to Mt Hakodate for a thrilling cable car ride to admire one of Japan’s best panoramic nighttime views from the summit.

Explore Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital, where you’ll visit ancient temples and shrines and enjoy an exclusive audience with a trainee geisha.
Today it’s time to leave Hokkaido behind and return to Honshu, Japan’s main island, by plane. Flying from Hakodate to Itami Airport, you’ll then take the train to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural heart and capital for over a millennium, from 794 until 1868. On arrival in the city, you will drop off your luggage at your hotel in time to enjoy a delicious included meal with your group. Kyoto’s illustrious history as the seat of Imperial rule has left it with a bounty of ancient temples, shrines, palaces and gardens. In fact, Kyoto’s heritage was considered so significant that it was spared bombing raids during World War Two, meaning that many of these historical treasures remain intact to this day.
On day ten your tour leader will take you on an extensive tour of the city, introducing you to some of its famous sites as well as some of its lesser-known treasures. This afternoon you will have the privilege of an exclusive audience with a maiko – or trainee geisha. This is a rare opportunity to ask questions and discover what life is like in this notoriously secretive world.
Finally, on day eleven, you will be free to continue exploring the countless sights of the city, or to make a day trip to one of the fascinating destinations within easy reach by rail. Your tour leader may be leading a tour of the former capital, Nara, just an hour’s train ride away. You can choose to accompany the group, or make alternative plans if there is something else you’d like to see.
Visit a stunning landscape gardens in one of Japan’s best-preserved traditional cities.
This morning, you will leave Kyoto and travel by train to Kanazawa on the Japan Sea coast, an area often referred to as yukiguni – snow country. Like Kyoto, Kanazawa was spared bombing during World War II thanks to its impressive collection of religious sites and important cultural assets. Today it is one of Japan’s best-preserved historical cities. The region is renowned for its great seafood and traditional crafts such as gold leaf and lacquerware. This afternoon you will visit Kenrokuen, ranked as one of Japan’s top three gardens and particularly famous for the ‘snow ropes’ that adorn the pine trees in winter, preventing the branches from breaking under the heavy weight of the snow. Additionally, if you have the energy after a busy tour, you might wish to visit the local market, samurai district, or the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.

Overnight: The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Sanjo
Today you will leave behind the beaten path and travel to Mount Koya, a remote mountaintop temple community and the spiritual home of Shingon Buddhism.
Mount Koya is located deep in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture and is home to a collection of ancient temples, shrines and pagodas – not to mention Okunoin, the largest cemetery in Japan. Located in a forest filled with towering cryptomeria trees, this atmospheric graveyard is a real wonder, seeming to go on interminably through the early morning mist.
Today you will have the services of a local guide to explain the history and significance of these sites, with lunch and entrance fees included. This evening you will be staying at a traditional Buddhist temple lodging, where you will have the chance to partake in shojin ryori – vegetarian Buddhist cuisine.
Overnight: Renge-in Shukubo
Today you’ll rise early in order to join the morning prayers at your temple lodging – a really special opportunity to witness ancient rituals being played out. After prayers you will enjoy a traditional Buddhist breakfast before jumping on a private bus to Wakayama Port, from where you will catch a ferry to Tokushima on Shikoku Island –the smallest of Japan’s four main islands.
Tokushima is most famous as the location of the largest dance festival in Japan, Awa Odori. After your arrival today, you’ll visit the Awa Odori Kaikan Museum for some background on the festival and ride the cable car to the top of nearby Mount Bizan for fantastic views across the city.
Overnight: Hotel Sunroute Tokushima
On the morning of day five you will take a half-day trip to the Awa Jurobe Yashiki puppet theatre, where you’ll have the rare opportunity to see traditional bunraku puppet theatre in an authentic setting. Afterwards you’ll make your way to Takamatsu, where you’ll have plenty of time left to explore Ritsurin Gardens, some of the best landscape gardens in Japan.
On day six you will be making a day trip from Takamatsu to the nearby island of Naoshima, internationally known for world-class art set in beautiful natural scenery. You’ll have the benefit of a local guide for your visit, who will explain the history of the island’s art projects and introduce you to some of its most impressive sights.
For lunch, you’ll stop at a local island café. You will also visit both Benesse House and Chichu Art museums, home to works by famous artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Claude Monet. This evening you’ll return to your hotel in Takamatsu.
Overnight: JR Clement Hotel
Today you’ll be making the scenic train ride from Takamatsu to Kotohira, a town best known as the location of Shikoku’s largest shrine complex – Konpira-san. Tonight you’ll be staying at a beautiful ryokan inn with its own hot spring baths and fabulous Japanese-style evening meals included on both nights of your stay.
In the afternoon of day seven you’ll have the chance to scale the 1,368 steps to Konpira-san’s inner shrine, a climb that’s well worth the effort as you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the area! There will also be time to visit the local sake brewery with its excellent little museum, as well as the chance to sample some rice wine.
On day eight you will board a private bus bound for the Iya Valley, a lush and undeveloped area of natural beauty, particularly famous for its vine bridges. Today you’ll cross one of these bridges yourself, have a delicious included lunch and enjoy a boat ride through one of the area’s gorges. We will also have time to visit a charming rural samurai residence before making our way back to Kotohira, where a second night of hot spring baths and feasting awaits.

Dogo Onsen, the town’s famous bathhouse, is conveniently located right next to your hotel. It is said to have existed for over 3,000 years, and currently undergoing a 7 year long restoration period for us to enjoy for many more generations to come. It is still accessibly by the public and even has a set of baths reserved exclusively for the use of the royal family. But don’t worry – there are separate baths for common folk, so you’ll also have a chance to bathe in the restorative waters this evening if you choose.
Overnight: Candeo Hotels Matsuyama Okaido
On day ten you will make your way by ferry from Matsuyama to Hiroshima, back on Japan’s main island. Hiroshima will always be remembered for the tragic events of 1945, and today you will visit the inspiring Peace Park and sobering Museum for an insight into the dropping of the world’s first atomic bomb. Informative and even-handed, this museum is a must-see on any visit to Hiroshima.
After a thought-provoking afternoon, the perfect antidote is to stroll the splendid riverside, take a waterside coffee, or hit lively Hondori shopping arcade to mix with the friendly locals. For our included evening meal, we’ll opt for okonomiyaki, Hiroshima’s best-known speciality food. Okonomiyaki is a kind of savoury noodle- or cabbage-based pancake, cooked on a hot plate in front of you. It always goes down a treat!
On day eleven you will make the short ferry ride across the bay from Hiroshima to Miyajima, a tiny island known for its friendly resident population of deer and for Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan’s most iconic views. We recommend hiking (or catching the cable car!) to the top of Mount Misen for fabulous views across the Seto Inland Sea.
Overnight: Intergate Hiroshima
Today you will take a side trip to Joge, a small historic town which has proved a perfect match for our ‘Hidden Japan’ concept. Little known to foreign tourists, Joge is renowned for its wonderful examples of original Meiji & Taisho era architecture and taking a walk down Joge’s main street really does feel like you’ve stepped back in time. We’ve arranged a full day of cultural activities with local guides and you will have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with members of the local community.
Late in the afternoon you’ll be whisked back to Kyoto on a super-fast Nozomi shinkansen bullet train, leaving you time to freshen up and head out to a local izakaya for a farewell evening meal with your tour leader and group. We suggest an evening of karaoke to really see out the tour with a bang!
On day thirteen it’s time to say goodbye and make your way back to the Airport by private car transfer for your flight home. We hope to see you next time!
